Vijayawada, the multifaceted hub of Andhra Pradesh is one of the fastest growing cities in the
country. Well Known as the business, cultural, educational and political nerve centre of
Andhra Pradesh, it also serves as an important transit junction for rail and road transport. The
phenomenal growth of the city has cast an enormous strain on the city’s infrastructure.
VMC is working whole heartedly and with total commitment towards the development of the
city on various fronts. Governmental agencies alone can not take on this mammoth task of
providing the infrastructure needs. VMC in the past three years has spent around Rs. 800 Cr. for
infrastructure development, slum development and for providing other basic needs with the help
of the Central and State Governments. It is envisaged to spend another Rs. 500 Cr. in the coming
two years period for city development.
Realizing the importance of public private partnership
for funding the infrastructure requirements, “Fund your City” initiative is being launched by VMC.
Under this initiative, NRI's, Corporate Houses, Banks, Philanthropists, NGOs, and other individuals are
being encouraged to come-up with proposals and plans for a new International Convention Center, which
shall be provided with a 5 acre site beside the NH9 as the existing convention center i.e.,
"Tummalapalli Kshetraiah Kalakshetram" is a very old and small one which is not upto the international
standards. Under this initiative, VMC also solicits proposals for modernizing the existing Indoor Sports Stadium
on M.G. Road or to come-up with a proposal for new Indoor Stadium and also to take up improvement of traffic
junctions, installation and maintenance of traffic signals, creation of bus bays/auto parking bays,
footpath improvements, erection of road dividers & signage, painting of zebra crossings,
improvement of parks, construction of public
toilets/urinals, adoption of slums, etc.
From 2007-08 to till date, Works worth Rs. 800 Cr. were taken up, among which several were completed and some are under various stages of completion
The Total Estimate proposed for various works in the coming two years is around Rs. 500 Cr.
